Sample letter to Congress

Honorable (Insert name of Senator/Representative)
Address of Senator/Representative

Dear Senator/Representative (last name):

The safety of our nations most precious resource, our children, must remain a top priority in Congress. I am writing to ask for your support for the re-introduction of The Infant Crib Safety Act in the 109th Congress.

Each year 26 infants die and another 11,600 are injured as a result of being placed in hazardous second hand and hand me down cribs. While federal and voluntary measures have been taken to reduce the number of incidents with new cribs, older models, which are continually recycled, still pose a very serious threat.

Safe crib legislation that prohibits the sale, resale, lease, or use of cribs that do not meet current safety standards in lodging facilities, childcare centers, etc., must be enacted. U.S. CPSC estimates there are 20 million unsafe secondhand or hand-me-down cribs currently being sold, used or in storage in the United States.

Ten states have already adopted legislation that makes it illegal to manufacture or sell cribs that don’t meet current safety standards. However, federal legislation would help to ensure the safety of all our nations children.

It is my hope that you would show leadership on this issue and keep Congress focused on passing safe crib legislation. Protecting our future starts with protecting our children.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
