Portable Cribs/ Play yards
Portable cribs and mesh play yards pose a serious threat for numerous reasons. These products can present choking or entanglement hazards; head entrapment or suffocation; and risk of injury from tipping when legs on the product become loose and separate.

CPSC estimates there are still 20,000,000 unsafe cribs/play yards in use or lurking in storage. Before you put your baby in a play yard or portable crib, check to be sure it's safe.

  • Mesh weave is no larger than 1/4 inch.
    Babies may get buttons, fingers and toes caught in large weave holes causing injury.
  • There are no tears, holes or loose threads.
    Babies may get head, buttons, fingers and toes caught in holes or torn fabric causing strangulation or injury.
  • Mattress Pad: In a mesh /fabric crib must not exceed one inch.
    Child will suffocate when caught between mattress and the side of the crib.
  • Folding Cribs: Top rail latches must work automatically to prevent the unintentional collapse of crib.
    If the baby tries to stand in or climb out of the crib it can collapse, babies die when entrapped in the “V” formed by the collapsed top rail. Check latches on top rail before each use.
  • Catch points: The crib must be free of protruding rivets, metal nuts or bolts. No knobs or wing nuts on the outside legs of the crib.
    If the baby tries to climb out of the crib he/she can catch their clothing on the on a protruding piece of hardware causing strangulation.

Graco Mesh play yard. Recalled play yards have manufacturing dates 111395 (November 13, 1995) through 091296 (September 12, 1996) Manufactured November 95 to September 1996. Mesh may unravel from the seam. The drop side style play yards have vinyl covered top rails and a vinyl covered pad. A manufacturing date is located on a label on the play yard floor under the pad. 133,000 play yards sold. No deaths or serious injuries reported. Call 1-800-423-9078 for more information on repairs.
Evenflo Houdini Portable Play Yards. All Houdini model numbers beginning with 332 are involved in the warning. Sold between 1994 and 1996. Warning of potential choking hazard. 205,000 play yards sold. Small plastic cover from "punch caps" used to secure various parts of the play yard together may crack and separate. No injuries or deaths reported. Call 1-800-490-7549 for more information on repairs.
Evenflo Happy Cabana, Happy Camper, Kiddie Camper portable playpens If hinges are not fully rotated, product may collapse and entrap child in folded top rails. Call 1-800-447-9178 for repair and more information.

Various models manufactured between 1960 and 1996. Play yards have protruding rivets (like nut and bolt fasteners) on which toddlers may catch articles of clothing. Check outside top rail for protruding rivets. Call 1-800-794-4115 to get remedy for these recalled play yards.
Gerry Baby Products Gerry "Fold Away Crib" compact crib that folds in seconds. Warning (not a recall). 17,043 cribs sold between May and August of 1994. If the cribs’ side rail is put in backwards, the mattress support could collapse. No serious injuries or deaths reported. Company out of business.
Lanacional, exa, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic The 3 crib styles involved in the recall are the Cama Cuna R.N.C., the Cama Cuna No. 2, and the crib with drawers. Recalled model of crib distributed in Puerto Rico (1995). Crib slats are greater than 2-3/8" and cornerpost exceed the standard. 2,288 cribs sold between January 1994 and April 12, 1995. No injuries or deaths reported. Call 1-809-758-3606 for more information.
Draco Corporation Portable crib/playpens. All Our Kids Models 741, 742 and 761. The crib/playpen may collapse and entrap child in folded top rails. STOP USE and DESTROY. Company is out of business.
